Recently as part of Georgi's school we read Mr. Popper's Penguins. A fantastic book, absolutely great.
Have I told you I love homeschooling? Especially all the great literature that comes with our chosen curriculum. I'm pretty darn pleased with it, that's for sure.
So, just like when we finished Charlotte's Web, I told the kids once we were done reading Mr. Popper's Penguins we could rent the movie.
Now I was a little apprehensive about getting the movie. Jim Carrey does not always (think mostly) produce great content for children's movies, his overthetop humor usually leaves me annoyed and I knew the movie wasn't going to be like the book, hardly at all.
And it really wasn't like the book, but it had the kids enamored with the penguins and laughing hysterically at all Mr. Popper's antics. Little G especially. Absolutely entertained. Plus it gave me the chance to ask the "what was different, what was the same", a little knowledge testing about the book.
In all it was a good read and a pretty good movie rendition (if only it would get more people to read the book!). And watching Little G enjoy the movie was completely worth it, that boy definitely does not hide excitement well.

AH! I read this just in time! I need a book to read to the boys when Eric's done reading The Wind In The Willows to them. I've been agonizing for a LONG time about what I was going to read next. I love books that have movies because I too, like to "test" their retention on the books. Thanks for the nick-of-time blog post!
